Adventures in Homeschooling!

So, I have been using Time4Learning for the last year or so and have been pleased with the results. My children enjoy the animation, characters, lessons, and personalized lesson plans. I like the fact that I don't have to micromanage them like I did when we used a boxed curriculum. We are in an age of technology and children and teens today use the computer for everything. More than I would like, but it is the way of the world so hey :) I alternate the days I allow the children to have off. After all I am a single work at home mother of 4 and my time is spread so thin.

One of the things that has been a major source of contention for me is the scrutiny I receive from my family/friends. I come from a long line of teachers that feel that my children are not "socialized" enough. They feel that my education level isn't sufficient enough to teach my K, 2nd, and 3rd grader. I have a BA in Art History and I guess that makes me the village idiot lol. I enjoy art and research....even history, so I share those passions with my babies too :) Time4Learning is so awesome because there is a virtual teacher that shares valuable lessons such as: Language Arts, Math, Language Arts Extension, Social Studies, and Science. There's a super cool section called Odyssey Writer that gives writing assignments and grades them accordingly. If you as the teacher of record runs into any problems or have questions, the friendly staff at T4L are there to answer your questions and assist with that lesson. The really cool thing is I have NEVER encountered a technical problem, ever. The one time I had a problem with the test scores not showing correctly, I found that the browser I was using wasn't as compatible with their programming. It is preferable that one uses IE or Firefox browsers. I religiously use Chrome.

I want to also note that I am an unschool advocate. Fortunately in my state the laws on homeschooling and unschooling are pretty relaxed, so we are free to use the world as our learning forum. There are days we explore museums, nature, the library, or just take a day to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy on YouTube :) Beakman's World and Horrible Histories are a favorite as well. We are supporters of PBS daily and nightly, and The Create Channel is a definite favorite. I believe that one learns at a more organic pace when you are free to explore what fascinates you as opposed to what some institution deems the appropriate materials. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with public schools. Some are exceptional. I dislike the culture of public school, the standard of teaching children to "test", compartmentalizing children in groups of smart, ADD, and underachievers. I always felt inadequate in public school. Though I was always in gifted classrooms, I was a social child and therefore labeled "hyperactive". In this day and age, that would have been considered ADD I'm sure. Thankfully my mother was a clinical psychologist and unschool advocate, and she eventually earned enough to put me in "free thinking" private schools. The schools that were at best unschool extensions of my own life a home. The only obscene part of this world was my tuition was $8000/yearly. Who can afford that?

So as of late I have been in a financial crunch. I work from home as a call center agent and have scaled down on our lifestyle and requirements. We live in a small 2 bedroom apt with 1 bathroom, our neighborhood is in the city and houses mostly minority working class and lower middle class residents. We have a used car and shop for clothing, household necessities primarily at Walmart, Kmart, swap meets, thrift stores and online discount  retailers. Amazon has definitely been a favorite for inexpensive homeschooling materials and school supplies. Now keep in mind, I have the non committal homeschooling approach. Only when I see that my children are struggling in certain areas do we have a more direct lesson planned homeschool day. For the most art, I find that my children learn from life experiences. It's important that children have materials and literature at their disposal to allow their creative juices to form, ebb, and flow. We are lovers of the arts. We enjoy science and exploration as well. My children love meeting new people and are friendly and engaging. They are inquisitive like most kids their age, and aren't withdrawn or shy when they meet their peer groups. They understand that some children are homeschooled while others attend public school. They've been in a public school setting (recently for  a month or two) so they understood the ins and outs of the scheduling and protocol. They were quite fond of their experiences, I felt as their mother there was no room for individuality and/or encouragement to embrace fine arts. There was a lack of the important things in life such as: music, art, recess, nutrition classes, religion, and freedom of expression. Bullying was a constant, not necessarily with my babies, but in the environment. The teachers weren't given adequate tools to promote or foster curriculum's that were near and dear to their own hearts. Most of the teachers had lost their enthusiasm for teaching because of the new laws that state if children failed in testing areas, their jobs were compromised.

In conclusion, I hope financially I can remain a stay at home, work at home, unschool/homeschool mom. If not, I hope that God will provide the best teacher/public school that will continue to promote the values and free thinking mindset that my children possess today.

Homeschooling Mom vs Work From Home

There are so many advantages to working from home. The commute or lack there of is definitely one of them. I always disliked having to get up, get dressed in uncomfortable business attire, and make that journey into an office with other people that may or may not want to be there. Working from home, I get up, shower, typically put on something casual (or stay in my PJ's), grab some coffee with coconut creamer, and walk a few feet to my workstation. I love it. I open my windows, gaze out, take lunch breaks in the neighborhood or on my patio. My "cafeteria" is the best because it's food that's great and free :) Occasionally I order take out. I feel like I'm blessed each time I have to log in for work.

I do have some challenges however, I still home school after hours. I am still required to make lesson plans and be my children's teacher of record. There is no conflict with my work and homeschooling. My children are not in my work environment. The challenge comes when I currently alternate between using a Catholic Curriculum (Our Lady of the Rosary Homeschool) and utilizing free printables online. The written instruction and the side by sides after 8-10 hrs of work can drain one of their energy for a week lol! We often unschool and use our visual resources such as YouTube and Netflix. All in all I'm satisfied with being a home school mom. It's the single mother part that makes these things challenging. There are many times I wish I had a loving partner to be there to supplement the family income, be supportive in the homeschooling venture, as well as be there for me emotionally. God has a plan. Divorce, which I'm going thru currently, is never easy. In the end, the most rewarding part of all is this is I have the pleasure of watching my children learn and grow. I am in control of their values and spirituality. There are stress filled days as well as triumphant "aha" moments! Sometimes I want to pull my hair out because I seemingly never get a break. I'm asking the Lord to continue

working on me with patience and understanding on those days that I feel overwhelmed and overextended. I hope that if any prospective homeschooling parents or parent are reading this blog, you are encouraged that it can be done, it is rewarding, and your children will have the benefit of the environment that you feel is fit. God bless you all and happy homeschooling!

Time 4 Learning :):)

I've been invited to try Time4Learning for one month in exchange for a candid review. My opinion will be entirely my own, so be sure to come back and read about my experience. Time4Learning can be used as a homeschool curriculum, forafterschool enrichment and for summer skill sharpening. Find out how to write your own curriculum review for Time4Learning.

Homeschooling mom villian

***post from 2012***
I have always had a problem with "validation" from others. Whether needing it, requesting it, or running away from it. It's crazy, you have to teach people have to treat you. The same is true of the notion of once bitten twice shy. Where am I going with this? As a 42 year old single mother of 4 kids ages 3, 5, 7, and 18, I should know what is best or what is better for them with regard to education and the like. My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with ADHD. He just wasn't doesn't doing well in a rigid setting. His current elementary school has a rule that during lunch time, yes lunch time, you cannot talk to your peers or anyone for that matter when the "music" is on. Now. for an adult that would be torture, can you imagine an ADHD or even a typical child? So, I have given up on the public school system. I will allow God to order my steps and let my children learn from their life experiences and use a biblical based curriculum at home, with yours truly, a teacher that loves and cares about my kids as individuals and not statistics.

Embarking on a fast of only coconut water and coconut meat

I have determined that, a blogger I am not. I have lots of thoughts, but no real consistency in keeping a blog. It takes tenacity, informative information, and tenacity. I feel bad admitting that the only time in my life I have expressed those characteristics, on a regular basis, is with regard to eating. Overeating. I have gained over 100 pounds in 2 years! With my separation from my husband, several major moves from Las Vegas to South Carolina, back to Las Vegas for a month, then finally to California, I am happiest when I am eating something, The greasier the cuisine the better. Isn't that deplorable to admit? They say the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem right? Don't get me wrong, I am a happy mother of 4 great kids: Kejan-19, Terrill-7, Diamond-6, and Alyssa-4. I am a stay at home homeschooling (borderline unschooling) mommy that enjoys discovering and learning from the world with my children. My adult child is a full time employee and college student, helpful and very respectful, I couldn't ask for anything more! They aren't the source of my food obsession, I am.
My decision to use coconut water as a fast and master cleanse came from watching lots of YouTube videos about purifying my body. I knew I needed to start somewhere. I suffer from hypertension, pre diabetes, pseudo tumor cerebri, gallstones, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and high cholesterol. God has kept me alive and able to use my good sense to say, enough is enough! I don't look forward to the toxins leaving my body and hunger pangs. What I do look forward to is that weightless feeling of "clean". So.....I decided to blog about my journey, my side effects, my feelings, my triumphs, and my tribulations! I hope you will gain some insight as well and cheer on my new mindset :) It's in black and white so if I fail, I have eyes watching right? I will put a before photo of my weight and an after. Thank you for your support and for subscribing to my blog!

Facebook frenzy

It's empowering to let go of wierd people. I know this appears to be a generalization, but I characterize weird behavior as someone that draws closer to you, and inextricably leaves without warning. They invite you into their personal lives, their children's lives, and without warning...disappear. Now it may seem like I am offended or even hurt by this. Yes, I am and was. But I had to realize that social media is just that "social". You may not really ever get to know a Facebook friend or a Twitter follower in real life. They aren't tangible in most ways. I held on to the simple notion that I actually could trust and believe that a person was who they said they were. After all, I have the terrible habit of wearing my feelings on my sleeve, and the "what you see if what you get" factor is my worst enemy. In short, I will miss my phantom Facebook friends and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year :) That's the TRUTH!!!!

New Year's Eve

Overcame objections, stood up to bullies, left non existent relationships behind, and secured a positive future. That looks like an amazing 2012 in my book!

.......and they wonder why were behind the Japanese...smh

There is social media website called Webbitz, which turns all text articles into videos so you never have to read again. Great, now we'll be a society of idiots. On a positive note

Status

Lately I have been very reflective about my "status" in this world. I tend to live a self fulfilling prophecy and I'm not happy with that. I seem to have more people in my life that desire to see me in a rut, than to succeed. Maybe that's not true. Maybe I'm victimizing myself to over compensate for my own failures. *sigh*

FURIOUS AND LIVID

Can't believe my teenagers choice in female companions! They all fit the same build. To make matters worse, they are rude, precocious, and never high achievers. Tonight one began yelling at me and basically attempting to out talk me. I feel so hostile toward my son for never taking my advice in the interim about the company he keeps.

Must blog more!

Lord knows I have a ton to say, and even more things happening in my life : ) 4th of July yesterday was so fun! Went to Weston Lake with cousins, mom +step dad, kids and aunts. Kids played in the water as if they were merpeople! I love it when a plan comes together

Saturday afternoon

I make no apologies....I am a home body.I love to be at home watching TV and movies...enjoying my children to the fullest,or at least until they work my nerves lol! I am not a fan of crowds. I do enjoy church and dining out. I am hoping that one day I can travel more and get to some art galleries, botanical gardens, and plays. Other than that, I'm me and I don't much care who doesn't like it *puts specs back on*

Christmas 2010

Merry Xmas ladies and gents! I can't believe it's been about a year since I began my blog! I remember being so optimistic during this time last year. I lived in Riverside CA, subleasing my longtime best friend Kisha's apt. I was happy. I wasn't working so I was able to be home with my children. I was a full time college student online. Things were great! I must say that 2010 was a terrible year for me. I found allot of betrayal and backbiting in this year. My big brother Todd died from Lou Gehrig's Disease, my other big brother Troy disappointed and betrayed me for absolutely no reason at all. Is there ever a reason?? I am now in Columbia SC and the only benefit of that is that I see my mother often.I still feel like eyes are always on me and that I can't make my own decisions.

I am thinking strongly about moving away again.I know that I will meet with scrutiny, but I may have to do it without anyone knowing except my mother. Maybe I will move to Charlotte or Atlanta. All I know is that a move is pretty certain. I plan to exert my full independence this next year. It won't matter who doesn't like it or me afterward. Amen

Broke

Okay, so I have officially been out of work by choice for like 11 mos...now I'm just bored of not having money and living like I'm use to. God has been good and kept all the bills on and the kids fed, but I feel more productive when I clock in and out. I do miss the kids, but I also love the benefit of buying them the little things they ask for. Right now the universal theme is, "mommy doesn't have any money but let's go to the park or The Strip!" This works but need to have more than that in my life. The one person I always thouht I could count on, just left us hanging. Made me a bitter pill, but he doesn't care. The hardest thing to do is watch someone you love, love somebody else.

Recent sadness

It's been a long time since I blogged. Not that there hasn't been anything interesting iin my life. Hmmmmmm, let's see..... moved back to Vegas. Live in a beautiful apartment community. Had a Mother's Day that was peaceful and receieved a card from my BFF and some beautiful wishes from FB friends. My estranged husband didn't email me at all. That hurt, but I expect that because we have been estranged for over 1 year now. Lately I have been having dreams of abandonement and it's caused alot of depression for me. I am looking forward to my renewed life here in Vegas, but I guess I anticipated that I would have a renewed relationship with people that I had falling outs with. So the moral of the story is that I have to brush myself off and keep it pushing because no one is going to attend my pity parties but me : (
